Improvement in Concussion Symptoms with Chiropractic Care

A study was published in the January 2018 issue of the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics documenting the improvement of concussion symptoms of headache, poor concentration and photophobia in a young boy who had suffered a traumatic accident days earlier. Sometimes called mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), the authors of this study used both these terms interchangeably to describe the same condition.

Improvement in Concussion Symptoms with Chiropractic Care - Austin Chiropractor Sports Injuries Atheletes Celebrity Care Headaches Neck PainAccording to the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s Medline Plus website, “A concussion is a type of brain injury. It involves a short loss of normal brain function. It happens when a hit to the head or body causes your head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in your brain.” Estimates of the number of concussions range from 2.5 to 3 million cases each year in the U.S. alone.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control list a number of symptom and danger signs associated with concussion. They include headache that gets worse and does not go away, weakness, numbness or decreased coordination, repeated vomiting or nausea, slurred speech, one pupil larger than the other, convulsions or seizures, or a loss of consciousness.

In this case, a 13-year-old boy was brought by his mother to a chiropractor in Auckland, New Zealand. The boy was suffering from a variety of symptoms related to a concussion. Five days earlier, he had suffered a skateboard accident where he had hit his head. After his fall, the boy was unconscious for 30 seconds. The boy also was suffering with a headache, a decrease in his concentration level, a moderately sore neck, and increased sensitivity to sound and light. His head pain would increase when he walked or laughed.

An examination was performed which revealed an increased sensitivity to light as well as a decrease in coordination. Static palpation, motion palpation, and spinal examination procedures revealed the presence of subluxation in the boy’s spine. Specific spinal adjustments were started to address the subluxations.

According the study, the boy reported significant symptomatic relief after the first visit. These immediate improvements included improved concentration as well as less sensitivity to light. After his second visit, he reported that his headache was no longer constant. Over the next several visits, the boy reported improvement in all symptoms and stated he was “feeling freer.” His condition continued to improve so that by the eighth visit, he reported a complete resolution of all symptoms.

In their conclusion the authors wrote, “This case illustrates how concussion symptoms, specifically headaches, concentration, and photophobia may improve in patients receiving chiropractic care. Further clinical research is warranted to investigate the efficacy of subluxation based chiropractic care in relation to the improvement of concussion symptoms.”

Patient with Foot Drop Helped with Chiropractic

On June 19, 2017, a case study was published in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research documenting the correction of foot drop in a patient receiving chiropractic care. According to the Mayo clinic website, “Foot drop, sometimes called drop foot, is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. If you have foot drop, you may drag the front of your foot on the ground when you walk. Foot drop isn’t a disease. Rather, foot drop is a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem.”

Patient with Foot Drop Helped with Chiropractic-Austin-Chiropractor-Professional-Athlete-Stars-Celebrity-Best-Local-Downtown-MobileThe most common mechanism for foot drop is damage or entrapment of the peroneal nerve. This nerve is a branch that comes off the larger sciatic nerve and innervates the muscles in the front of the lower leg and foot. Damage to this nerve anywhere along the path from the origin at the lumbar spine down to the foot can result in symptoms of foot drop or a loss of sensation in the webbing of the toes.

Medical treatment for foot drop includes lightweight braces to support the foot, shoe inserts (orthotics), physical therapy, or even surgery. Braces or shoe inserts are designed to support the problem but can not help correct the cause. Physical therapy may help strengthen the muscles involved on a temporary basis. If a specific entrapment to the peroneal nerve is identified, surgery may be helpful.

In this case, a 24-year-old male weight lifter went to a college chiropractic clinic after he developed foot drop of unknown origin. He stated that he went to get out of the bed in the morning and had no strength in his lower right leg. He also described a mild tingling feeling on the front portion of his leg below his knee. When he lifted his right leg off the ground, his foot would point as he had no ability to raise the foot up to a normal position.

Upon testing the muscles of the leg, it was observed that the man had no strength in the muscles of the front of his lower leg. This would cause his foot to just fall. The muscles of the front of the leg are controlled by the peroneal nerve.

The patient received chiropractic adjustments to address subluxations of the spine and a misalignment observed in the right knee. The patient reported that after each chiropractic visit there was some improvement in this condition. Initially, the man noticed an increase in sensation to the areas that had a loss of sensation. By the fifth visit, he was able to start to bring his foot up again toward a more normal position. By the twelfth visit, there was complete resolution of his foot drop.

In their conclusion, the study authors summed up the results by saying, “In this particular case of insidious onset of foot drop, chiropractic care was shown to help in the complete resolution of signs and symptoms.”

Pain with No Medical Cause Helped by Chiropractic

What is Conversion Disorder? Can Chiropractic Help?

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case study on March 9, 2017, describing a patient who was having severe pain with no medical reason being found. The patient was referred to a psychiatrist but instead went to a chiropractor where she found relief.

Pain with No Medical Cause Helped by Chiropractic Austin TX Chiropractor Help Personal Injury Car Accident Truck Collision Pain Attorney LOP Insurance PIPThe study begins by pointing out that throughout the history of chiropractic, many patients who found help under chiropractic were prior medical failures. The authors stated, “In more than a century of the chiropractic profession, anecdotes and testimonials are replete with describing the success of chiropractic care in patients with a history of non-responsiveness to medical care.”

In many cases where no medical reason for pain can be found, the patient is often sent for psychiatric evaluation and told they have conditions such as conversion disorder or hysteria, or simply told that their problem is “all in your head.” The patient in this case study fits this category.

In this case, a 16-year-old girl went to the chiropractor with her parents consent. Two days earlier, she had suffered an injury while throwing a discus. She reported that she heard and felt a “rip” upon release of the discus. She immediately felt a severe stabbing burning pain across her shoulders and lower neck. She rated the pain as a 10 out of 10 using a scale of 0 to 10 with 10 being the worst pain. Within 40 minutes, she reported that her left arm went numb and weak.

No chiropractic care was rendered at the time of her first visit and the girl went to an orthopedic specialist for further evaluation. She remained in a hospital for 8 days during which time an orthopedic evaluation was performed. This included an MRI which showed no findings. Because the the orthopedic tests did not find a reason for her pain, and because she had a past history of depression, the girl was discharged from the hospital and referred to a psychiatrist for evaluation. After 11 additional days, she returned to the chiropractor and chiropractic care was started.

Following her first chiropractic adjustment, the girl reported a 50% increased muscle strength within 1 hour of her visit. By her 4th visit, she reported that she had regained normal use of her left arm. However, she continued to experience neck pain and stiffness. By the sixth visit, her pain was gone and her full range of motion had returned.

Approximately 5 months later, the girl reported another injury after being hit on the head with a basketball. From this injury, she started to experience some of her initial symptoms, but not as severe. After one adjustment, the girl reported a complete recovery from her symptoms.

In their conclusion, the authors summed up this case by saying, “This case report described the successful chiropractic care of a teenager with vertebral subluxations and signs and symptoms not congruent with objective outcome measures. Such patients may benefit from chiropractic care despite the lack of positive medical testing to inform medical care.”

Super Bowl LI Included Chiropractic

Do Athletes Receive Chiropractic Care? Does Dr. Swanson Take Care of Sports Injuries?

All 32 NFL teams include the professional services of a DC as part of their integrated health care team approach, according to a February 1, 2017, release by the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress. Both the Super Bowl participants, the Atlanta Falcons and the Champion New England Patriots had team chiropractors available to adjust their players for optimal performance and reduce the risk of injuries.

Super Bowl LI Included Chiropractic-Austin-Chiropractor-Sports-Injuries-Professional-Athletes-Celebrity-ChiropracticThe release notes that the New England Patriots have had the same team chiropractor for 35 years. Dr. Michael Miller, who attended his ninth Super Bowl this year stated, “During the NFL season, I regularly visit the stadium on my afternoon off from my office, as well as on game days both at home and away. Chiropractic care is emphasized by the head coach, trainers and medical staff as a proactive regimen to prevent injuries, with most of the players receiving adjustments roughly 1-2 times per week.”

Chiropractic has two functions when it comes to care for athletes. They seek care to maximize their performance, and to prevent and manage injuries. Dr. Miller explains, “We’ve also earned the respect of other team physicians as a necessary protocol, and are all committed to one goal: keeping the athletes performing at their maximum potential and preventing and managing injuries as they occur.” He continued, “The players are educated about the principles of chiropractic and that it is designed to eliminate the cause of their problem rather than just masking their symptoms.”

The Atlanta Falcons team chiropractor, Dr. Joseph Krzemien, points out that players who receive regular chiropractic care are less prone to injury. “During the six seasons I’ve spent with the Atlanta Falcons, my goal has always been to prepare each player’s body to better resist trauma and to speed its natural recovery time,” he says. “This season, the Falcons have been successful for a lot of reasons, but I firmly believe that regular chiropractic care has played an important role in helping us stay healthy and get to Super Bowl LI – I am proud of the role I’ve played in their success.”

The Green Bay Packers chiropractor, Dr. Michael Zoelle, added, “Ensuring that the joints are functioning properly is critical in the healing process, as well as for injury prevention and optimal performance,” says Dr. Zoelle. “The players recognize that chiropractic care helps them to perform better and heal faster, ultimately leading to better team success.”

Dr. Lucas Matlock, President of the Florida Chiropractic Society and chiropractor for many professional athletes, explains how important chiropractic is for the success of a professional athlete. “Chiropractic detects and removes interference to the nervous system at the spine, called subluxations. When an athlete’s nervous system is free from interference, he or she can perform at a maximum level. For some athletes this could be the difference between making the team and the Hall of Fame.”

Athletes at World Games Utilize and Benefit from Chiropractic According to Study

Do Athletes Utilize Chiropractic Care? Do Chiropractors Treat Sports Injuries?

The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics published a retrospective study in their November/December 2016 edition that reviewed the usage of chiropractic care during the World Games in Cali, Colombia, from July 25 to August 4, 2013.

Athletes at World Games Utilize and Benefit from Chiropractic According to Study-Austin-TX-Chiropracty-Sports-Training-Hockey-Football-BestThe study begins by noting the overall increase of chiropractic utilization in the United States and Canada has risen from 4% in 1980 to 14% in the U.S. by 2015. They report that a high percentage of the people seeking chiropractic care do so for musculoskeletal issues related to back pain.

The authors also reported that in another study of 1.7 million people, having access to insurance that includes chiropractic care caused a significant reduction in overall medical expenditures with specific decreases in spinal surgery and all back-related medical treatments.

Chiropractic care was rendered at the games by 40 doctors of chiropractic and observed by six researchers. This was arranged by the International World Games Association (IWGA) who contracted with the Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS) to provide free chiropractic care to athletes and support staff who were accredited at this event.

In the review of chiropractic utilization at the 2013 World Games the study showed that 537 of 2964 accredited athletes received chiropractic care during the games. This represents a utilization rate of 18.1% for the athletes. The utilization for the accredited non-athletes was lower with 403 of 4131 in this group receiving chiropractic care. This showed a utilization rate of 9.8% for non-athletes.

Athletes seeking chiropractic care were from 68 of the 93 participating countries. Of the total of 33 sporting events at the games, athletes from 28 of those sports sought chiropractic care. The breakdown showed that the largest utilization rates were from bowling scored at 48%, with water skiing being second at 42%, then fistball at 41%, and wushu with 41% of those athletes seeking chiropractic care.

Of the athletes who sought chiropractic, 37% had an acute or newer conditions, while 55% had chronic or long-term problems. The non-athletes presented themselves for chiropractic at a ratio different from the athletes with only 20% having acute conditions, while 61% were suffering from a chronic condition. Those receiving chiropractic reported good results. The study showed that 86.9% patients reported immediate improvement after receiving chiropractic.

In their conclusion, the study authors reported, “The majority of people seeking chiropractic care at an international sporting competition were athletes. For those seeking care, the injury rate was higher among athletes than among non-athletes. The majority of patients receiving chiropractic care reported improvement after receiving care.”

Erectile Dysfunction and Chronic Low Back Pain Helped with Chiropractic

What is ED? What are Treatments for ED? Can Chiropractic Care Help Erectile Dysfunction?

Published on December 5, 2016, in the journal Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research is a case study of a man who was suffering from lower back pain and erectile dysfunction being helped by chiropractic.

Erectile Dysfunction and Chronic Low Back Pain Helped with Chiropractic-Austin-TX-Chiropractor-Sciatica-Shooting-Leg-Thigh-Buttocks-PainAccording to the study authors, erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as a man’s inability to attain or sustain an erection satisfactory for sexual intercourse. They report that there are two classifications of ED, primary and secondary. Primary ED is a man who has never been able to have an erection, while secondary is the case where a man used to be able to have an erection but is currently unable to.

According to the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health website, “About 5 percent of men that are 40 years old have complete erectile dysfunction, and that number increases to about 15 percent of men at age 70. Mild and moderate erectile dysfunction affects approximately 10 percent of men per decade of life (i.e., 50 percent of men in their 50s, 60 percent of men in their 60s).”

In this case, a 47-year-old man went to the chiropractor on three separate occasions for the complaints of lower back problems and neck pain. At those times, he did not report that he had also been suffering from ED since the age of 22 years. He did have a history of spinal trauma at the ages of 16 and 20 years.

An examination performed on this first set of visits to this chiropractor yielded the conclusion that subluxations were present in the man’s spine. Care was given in the form of specific adjustments and the man reported a significant recovery. He thereafter decided not to continue with chiropractic wellness and he discontinue his care.

Several years later, the man returned to the chiropractor again suffering from lower back pain. Once again care was given and the man experienced a significant recovery. This time he was able to resume sports and activities fairly quickly which led to him suffering a neck injury several months later.

Although the man did not share his history of having ED with the chiropractor initially, upon returning for chiropractic care related to his neck injury, the man noticed the correlation between the correction of his ED and the time he was under chiropractic care. Because of this connection, the man continued his chiropractic on a wellness basis and was able to report to the chiropractor that his ED was effectively eliminated while under chiropractic care.

The man commented about his ED improvement by saying, “For a short time after receiving an adjustment it is much easier and highly more likely that (he) will attain and maintain a strong erection.” When asked by the doctor if he will be maintaining his chiropractic care since he has made the connection between that and the improvement in his ED, he commented, “Of course!”

Major League Baseball Pitchers Depend on Chiropractic

Do Athletes Use Chiropractors? How Does Chiropractic Care Improve Athletic Performance?

As baseball season begins, more Major League Baseball players are turning to chiropractic to help their game. One such story released April 9, 2016, in the Duluth News Tribune carries the headline, “Twins pitchers now well-adjusted: Gibson, May opt for chiropractic care to remain ready for the mound.”

Major League Baseball Pitchers Depend on Chiropractic - Austin TX Chiropractic Care for Help with Pain Relief celebrity chiropractorThe article centers on Minnesota Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson, and begins by describing what he will do after the opening game of the season, “…the durable young right-hander will connect with perhaps the most important member of his support team this year: his chiropractor.”

The article goes on to explain that even though the 28-year-old is in the prime of  his career, he suffered some back problems toward the end of last season. Gibson described the problem by saying, “There were a couple starts where I didn’t sit down in between innings because if I sat down, my hips just got tight.”

The article also reported that the Twins 26-year-old relief pitcher, Trevor May, also suffered back problems. At first, May only sporadically went to the chiropractor with limited results. However, upon getting more regular adjustments, May’s condition improved. He commented, “We found that baseball players get skeletally out of line. They do one motion one way much harder (than most people), and my hips were really, really out of line. Seeing a chiropractor consistently has helped me make sure I’m getting readjusted and staying in line as much as possible.”

The Twins are not the only MLB team with pitchers who see chiropractors. The Florida Marlins pitchers Adam Conley, Jarred Cosart, and Wei-Yin Chen also receive chiropractic care to improve their game.  Chen, who just signed an 80 million dollar contract with the Marlins commented how chiropractic helps him by saying that he “…noticed a huge difference in recovery time between pitching days.”

“A properly functioning nervous system is essential for pitchers to perform at their highest level,” says Dr Lucas Matlock, president of the Florida Chiropractic Society and a chiropractor who cares for the trio of Marlin’s pitchers. “Chiropractic care removes interference from the nervous system, though specific adjustments of subluxations, which then allows athletes to perform at their highest level.” Dr. Matlock continued, “For some, chiropractic care could make the difference in their career.”

A comment from Dr. Matlock on social media posed the question, “What does the Miami Marlins pitcher Adam Conley and his beautiful family do immediately after he pitches a 5 inning, 81 pitch, 2 hitter you ask? Go right to their chiropractor of course, to ensure his body will recover as quickly and completely as possible.”

Professional Baseball Player Back in the Game with Chiropractic

Do Professional Athletes Use Chiropractors? Can Chiropractic Help Major League Baseball Pitchers?

USA Today published a story on May 8, 2015, with the headline, “Nats star Strasburg feels better after visiting chiropractor.” The story starts by reporting that Stephen Strasburg, a pitcher for the Washington Nationals baseball team, was feeling much better and able to play again after he visited a chiropractor.

Professional Baseball Player Back in the Game with Chiropractic - Stephen Strasburg - Austin TX Celebrity ChiropractorStephen Strasburg was an overall number one Major League Baseball draft pick of the Washington Nationals back in 2009. He made the National League all-star team in 2012. Strasburg is known for speed and pitches an average fastball of 94.7 mph. April of 2012 was the best month of his career to date when he was named National League pitcher of the month. In that month, he accumulated an NL-best 34 strikeouts and second-best 1.13 ERA. He totaled 6 walks and did not give up a home run.

The story reports that Strasburg was pitching on the previous Tuesday evening when he left the game due to what his coach called an “alignment issue under his shoulder blade.” Strasburg went to a chiropractor the next day.

Strasburg described the results as immediate. “It was instant,” Strasburg said. “After he felt around for a little bit, felt what was different from the other side, just got it all out of there. So, night and day. I feel good right now, so just going to keep trying to improve and get better,” he said. “But at the same time, I’m feeling pretty good right now.”

The next day in a MasnSports.com article, Strasburg further explained, “The issue that I had was corrected within 45 minutes of seeing the chiropractor. Ever since then, it hasn’t been an issue.”

Two days after seeing the chiropractor, Strasburg was cleared to start practice again. He reported that his practices went well. “I feel good. It feels good playing catch,” Strasburg said. “Just going to throw a bullpen tomorrow and go on from there.”

Do Professional Athletes Use Chiropractic? Can Chiropractic Care Help My Golf Game?

On April 12, 2015, Jordan Spieth became the second youngest golfer to ever win the Masters Tournament. Spieth did it by tying the Masters record with 18 under par.  After his win, Spieth thanked several people including his chiropractor.

2015 Masters Tournament Winner, Jordan Spieth, Credits Chiropractic Care for Good Health and Peak Performance - Austin TX Celebrity ChiropractorThe Foundation for Chiropractic Progress issued a release on May 4, 2015, with the headline above and and stated, “Following a record-breaking win at the 2015 Masters Tournament, 21-year-old Jordan Spieth recognized those who significantly contributed to his victory, including his doctor of chiropractic Troy Van Biezen, Dallas, Texas. Since the age of 14, Spieth has relied upon chiropractic care to prevent injuries as well as optimize overall health and athletic performance.”

The Star Tribune reported in an  article on April 13, 2015, that Spieth made a home video when he was just 14-years-old, stating that he would one day win the Masters. His boyhood proclamation would have to wait until he was 21 to become a reality.

In thanking his chiropractor, Spieth commented, “Dr. Van Biezen is an important member of my team and, thanks to his care, my all-time dream of winning the Masters Tournament has now become a reality.” Dr. Van Biezen currently travels full-time with Spieth and several other professional golfers, providing chiropractic care as regularly as once or twice per day.

Concussion Patient Helped with Chiropractic Care

What Are Symptoms Of A Concussion? Can Chiropractic Care Help Concussions?

The Nov. 3, 2014, issue of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case study of a young woman who had suffered a concussion being helped with chiropractic care.  According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “A concussion may occur when the head hits an object, or a moving object strikes the head. A concussion is a minor or less severe type of brain injury, which may also be also called a traumatic brain injury. A concussion can affect how the brain works for awhile. It may lead to a bad headache, changes in alertness, or loss of consciousness.”

The study authors point out that much of the discussion about concussions has involved sports with football being singled out.  They report that, currently, more than 3,000 professional football players are suing the NFL for not properly educating them on the risk of brain injury while playing football.  Children who play sports are also at risk as the study points out that estimates suggest that 5,000 American children are injured or die from sports related concussions per year.

Concussion Patient Helped with Chiropractic Care - Austin TX ChiropractorIn this study, the concussion was not caused by a sports injury. This is the case of a 15-year-old girl who was struck on the head by a falling van rear door. She was taken to the hospital where she was diagnosed with a concussion. Twenty-eight days after her injury, she was brought to the chiropractor suffering from pain on the back portion of her head, headaches, and difficulty concentrating.

Prior to her injury, the young girl played high school hockey. As a precaution related to her sport, she was given a pre-injury ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) concussion test, which could be used to access her norm should she suffer a concussion playing hockey. As it turned out, this test prior to her injury would help access her progress after her injury.

An extensive chiropractic and neurological examination was performed which included palpation, range of motion, nerve tests, surface EMG, and thermography.  X-rays taken at the hospital after the accident showed a slight reversal of the normal forward neck curve. From these findings, it was determined that subluxations were present in multiple areas of her spine.

Specific chiropractic adjustments were begun to correct her subluxations. After her first adjustment, the patient reported immediate relief. She continued to report improvement by her fourth chiropractic visit. After her ninth visit to the chiropractor, the patient had another  ImPACT test performed which showed that she had improved so much that her score was higher than the score she had received prior to her injury. By her thirteenth visit, the girl reported that she had not had any more headaches and that her difficulty concentrating had completely resolved.

In their conclusion the authors wrote, “This case report reviews the benefits of chiropractic care in the management of a patient with concussion. By correcting the patient’s spinal subluxations with specific chiropractic adjustments her symptoms were alleviated. The patient’s cognitive function was tested and shown to be at a level higher than before her injury.”
