Resolution of Low Back Pain in an 8-year-old Following Chiropractic Care

Do Chiropractors See Children? Do Kids Suffer From Chronic Back Pain?

A case study published in the July 28, 2016, issue of the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research documented the case of a young girl suffering with chronic lower back pain being helped by chiropractic adjustments of the neck.

Resolution of Low Back Pain in an 8-year-old Following Chiropractic Care - Austin Chiropractor for Pediatric Care for kidsThe study begins by pointing out that lower back pain in children is more common than normally perceived. Statistics show that around 50% of children will experience some episode of lower back pain. Normally, lower back pain in children starts around the ages of 12 to 14 with an increase in incidence as age increases. There is no difference between boy and girls in the frequency of this condition.

In this case study, an 8-year-old girl suffering from middle and lower back pain was brought to the chiropractor. She had had these problems for the previous two years. She had not been to any healthcare provider for this problem before visiting the chiropractor. Her parents reported that, “She has been complaining of nightly back pain for a while.” The only care rendered at home was some stretching exercises and massage, neither of which were effective.

An examination was performed which included vital signs, neurological and orthopedic tests, cervical static and motion palpation, and range of motion tests. No restrictions or abnormalities were noted in the range of motion for the girl’s lower back.

The girl’s neck did show some positive finding of muscle tightness, and sensitivity to palpation. A positive thermal scan of the neck helped confirm the presence of subluxations. Adjustments were started on the girl’s neck. The study shows that although she would feel better, the lower back pain returned the following day. Additional history was revealed that reported that the girl had fallen down a flight of steps at age three. With this new information, x-rays of the girl’s neck were then performed.

With the new findings, specific adjustments were performed when indicated. Because of these new adjustments, the girl’s pain was alleviated, and only returned once after the girl fell in her kitchen. After a specific neck adjustment, the pain once again was gone.

In the conclusion of this study the author wrote, “Significant improvement of the pediatric patient’s complaint of low back pain in this case report demonstrates the need for further investigation. The use of a non-invasive, light-force, and highly specific method of correction upper cervical subluxations may prove to be a safe and cost-effective method of care for pediatric back pain in similar cases.”

Pregnancy-Related Lumbopelvic Pain Improved with Chiropractic

What Can I Do For Pregnancy Pains? Do Chiropractors See Pregnant Patients?

The June 2016 issue of the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine published a case study involving a pregnant woman suffering from pregnancy-related lumbopelvic pain (PR LPP) being helped by chiropractic care.

Pregnancy-Related Lumbopelvic Pain Improved with Chiropractic - Austin TX Relief for Pregnant Webster Technique Low Back PelvisThe study authors note that women suffering with lumbopelvic pain only see care in about 25% of the cases because many believe that the pain is normal during pregnancy. Those who do not gain relief are more likely to continue to have pain after their pregnancy. A previous randomized chiropractic clinical trial showed that chiropractic care given in conjunction with the normal obstetric care was more effective in eliminating pregnancy-related lumbopelvic pain than just obstetric care by itself.

In this case, a 35-year-old pregnant woman presented herself for chiropractic care. She was suffering with moderate pregnancy-related lumbopelvic pain and leg pain. The pain was over both pelvic bones across her lower back. She also reported having an “uncomfortable” tension in her neck and shoulders.

She rated her back and leg pain as a 7 out of 10, with 10 being the worst. The pain started at about the 20th week of her pregnancy and was now radiating down her leg. She reported that standing or sitting for more than 30 minutes, or walking for more than 10 minutes, made her condition worse.

Her history noted that this pregnancy was the result of her fourth in vitro fertilization in a time period of less than 5 years. A previous attempt resulted in the birth of her son. However, two additional attempts to become pregnant resulted in complications and terminated pregnancies.

After an examination, chiropractic care was initiated. The woman was also given some stretching exercises and advised to slowly increase the amount of walking she was doing. Within one week of starting chiropractic care, the woman reported a reduction in the severity and duration of her low back and leg pain. She noted that she was able to sit and walk for longer periods of time.

After 13 visits, she was able to walk or stand for longer than 30 minutes, and sit and travel for more than one hour in the car. This made her daily activities much easier and she reported a decrease in her stress and anxiety. Her overall pain rating dropped from a 7 to a 2 out of 10.

Resolution of Infertility with Chiropractic – A Case Study

Can Chiropractic Help With Infertility? How Does Chiropractic Help Me Conceive?

From the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health comes a case study and literature review published on July 7, 2016, documenting a case of infertility being resolved with chiropractic. Infertility is the inability to conceive within one year of attempting to get pregnant.

Resolution of Infertility with Chiropractic - Austin TX Pediatric Fertility Care for Mom and DadThe study begins by noting that about 85% of couples attempting to conceive are successful in the first year. Therefore, a timeframe longer than one year is classified as infertility. It is estimated that 6 million couples are struggling with infertility in the United States.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common form of infertility that prevents ovulation. It affects approximately 6.6% of reproductive-aged women and is characterized by swollen ovaries, cysts or follicles on ovaries, infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne, and obesity. Women with PCOS often have difficulty becoming pregnant, and could develop other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease.

In this case, a 30-year-old woman went to the chiropractor with a chief complaint of ulcerative colitis and neck pain which extended into her upper back. She was also suffering from tension headaches on a regular basis. Her history revealed three car accidents with the oldest dating back to over 30 years ago. She also reported that she had been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). She was unable to get pregnant and was told by her MD that her ovaries were “covered in cysts.”

A chiropractic examination was performed which included a spinal analysis, postural analysis, leg length analysis, static palpation, motion palpation, paraspinal thermography, and spinal x-rays to determine the levels of vertebral subluxation. Based on the findings, chiropractic care was initiated to address the spinal subluxations at the rate of two visits per week.

By the fifth chiropractic visit, the patient reported that her neck pain had significantly decreased, and she reported having no headaches that week. By her 14th visit, the woman reported that she was no longer having pain from her ulcerative colitis.

As she continued her care, she noticed that she had begun ovulating for the first time in eight years. Because of this, the woman and her husband decided to try to conceive again. This time, after only the first attempt, they were successful and she became pregnant. Shortly over 40 weeks later, she gave birth to a baby boy. The woman continued under wellness chiropractic care and, one year later, became pregnant again, delivering a baby girl 9 months later.

In the study conclusion, the author wrote, “Chiropractic adjustments, resulting in reduced vertebral subluxations, appear to have benefited a female who was previously anovulatory. Reduction of vertebral subluxations may have a relationship to improved female fertility and the ability to achieve pregnancy.”

Millions of Antibiotic Prescriptions Each Year are Unnecessary, Study Finds

Are Antibiotics Over-Prescribed? When Should I Take Antibiotics?

The above headline comes from a May 3, 2016, article reported by CBS News. This article and several others on this subject were based on a new study released on May 3, 2016, in the Journal of the American Medical Association, (JAMA).

Millions of Antibiotic Prescriptions Each Year are Unnecessary, Study Finds - Austin TX Chiropractor CelebrityThe title of the JAMA study was, Prevalence of Inappropriate Antibiotic Prescriptions Among US Ambulatory Care Visits, 2010-2011.  The study begins by stating the importance of the study saying, The National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria set a goal of reducing inappropriate outpatient antibiotic use by 50% by 2020, but the extent of inappropriate outpatient antibiotic use is unknown.

According to the study, approximately one-third of all antibiotic prescriptions are inappropriate. The problem is that heavy usage of antibiotics has resulted in more antibiotic resistant bacteria, commonly referred to as superbugs. Because of the rise in antibiotic resistance, and the increased strength of the bacteria, more deaths due to these types of infections have been occurring. Estimates are that each year antibiotic-resistant bacteria infect 2 million Americans of which about 23,000 die.

Lead researcher, Dr. Katherine Fleming-Dutra, stated in a HealthDay news article,  We were able to conclude that at least 30 percent of the antibiotics that are given in doctors’ offices, emergency departments and hospital-based clinics are unnecessary, meaning that no antibiotics were needed at all.

Fleming also noted that about half of the antibiotics given for acute respiratory infections were not needed. She stated,  Nobody should be giving antibiotics for the common cold, it gets better without antibiotics.

In a companion editorial in the same issue of JAMA, Drs. Tamma and Cosgrove stated, the statement ‘If you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it,’ attributed to Lord Kelvin, is of particular relevance to the field of antibiotic stewardship. Whereas the plea for optimizing how antibiotics are used in the United States has been ongoing for more than 50 years, improvement has been slow.

Major League Baseball Pitchers Depend on Chiropractic

Do Athletes Use Chiropractors? How Does Chiropractic Care Improve Athletic Performance?

As baseball season begins, more Major League Baseball players are turning to chiropractic to help their game. One such story released April 9, 2016, in the Duluth News Tribune carries the headline, “Twins pitchers now well-adjusted: Gibson, May opt for chiropractic care to remain ready for the mound.”

Major League Baseball Pitchers Depend on Chiropractic - Austin TX Chiropractic Care for Help with Pain Relief celebrity chiropractorThe article centers on Minnesota Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson, and begins by describing what he will do after the opening game of the season, “…the durable young right-hander will connect with perhaps the most important member of his support team this year: his chiropractor.”

The article goes on to explain that even though the 28-year-old is in the prime of  his career, he suffered some back problems toward the end of last season. Gibson described the problem by saying, “There were a couple starts where I didn’t sit down in between innings because if I sat down, my hips just got tight.”

The article also reported that the Twins 26-year-old relief pitcher, Trevor May, also suffered back problems. At first, May only sporadically went to the chiropractor with limited results. However, upon getting more regular adjustments, May’s condition improved. He commented, “We found that baseball players get skeletally out of line. They do one motion one way much harder (than most people), and my hips were really, really out of line. Seeing a chiropractor consistently has helped me make sure I’m getting readjusted and staying in line as much as possible.”

The Twins are not the only MLB team with pitchers who see chiropractors. The Florida Marlins pitchers Adam Conley, Jarred Cosart, and Wei-Yin Chen also receive chiropractic care to improve their game.  Chen, who just signed an 80 million dollar contract with the Marlins commented how chiropractic helps him by saying that he “…noticed a huge difference in recovery time between pitching days.”

“A properly functioning nervous system is essential for pitchers to perform at their highest level,” says Dr Lucas Matlock, president of the Florida Chiropractic Society and a chiropractor who cares for the trio of Marlin’s pitchers. “Chiropractic care removes interference from the nervous system, though specific adjustments of subluxations, which then allows athletes to perform at their highest level.” Dr. Matlock continued, “For some, chiropractic care could make the difference in their career.”

A comment from Dr. Matlock on social media posed the question, “What does the Miami Marlins pitcher Adam Conley and his beautiful family do immediately after he pitches a 5 inning, 81 pitch, 2 hitter you ask? Go right to their chiropractor of course, to ensure his body will recover as quickly and completely as possible.”

Resolution of Infantile Colic in Infant after Chiropractic

What Do I Do With A ColiCky Baby? Does Chiropractic Care Help Colic? Do Chiropractors Treat Infants and Babies?

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a study on March 7, 2016, documenting the case of an infant with colic being resolved under chiropractic care. It is estimated that colic occurs at a rate of between 10% and 40% of infants up to 3 months of age.

Resolution of Infantile Colic in Infant after Chiropractic - Austin TX Chiropractor Pediatric Infants Babies Kids Children TeensThe study begins by noting that infantile colic was defined in 1954 by Dr. Morris Wessel who determined that a series of “threes” were needed to make the determination of colic. The “threes” were: an infant crying and/or fussing for more than three hours a day, on three or more days per week, for three weeks or more, in an infant less than three months of age who was well-fed and otherwise healthy.

Excessive crying seems to be the chief characteristic of infants suffering from colic. The authors note that the crying is usually difficult to console and associated with feeding problems that include spitting, poor sleep, and passing excessive gas.

In this case, a three-month-old baby boy was brought to the chiropractor with symptoms of colic and frequent crying spells. The baby would scream and cry without any noticeable reason. The boy’s parents described their baby’s situation by saying he “…screams and cries out of nowhere, not sure if its personality or something hurts, screams like he’s in pain.”

The history reported that the baby had severe signs of colic that seemed to reduce at seven weeks but then returned. The baby was also suffering from an overactive gastrointestinal and urinary tract that included increased frequency of bowel movements and increased urination. His colic issues were causing sleep issues as he would wake up crying in pain.

Chiropractic care was begun on the boy with specific modifications for his size and youth. Dietary recommendations were also given to the mother. By the fourth visit, it was reported that the baby boy was improving and was crying and screaming less. His sleep patterns had not yet improved at that point.

Over the next several visits, the boy continued to improve and was “doing great” according to his parents. The boy returned to normal and did not have a return of his colic or any other problems.

In their conclusion the author wrote, “This case study reports on the successful resolution of colic following the introduction of chiropractic care to reduce subluxations in a three-month-old infant.”
