Trigeminal Neuralgia Helped with Chiropractic Care – A Case Study

The November 14, 2016, issue of the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research published a case study of a patient suffering from daily Trigeminal Neuralgia pain being helped with chiropractic. According to the study author, “Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), ‘tic douloureux,’ French in origin meaning ‘painful spasm,’ is a widespread neurological disorder that is often misdiagnosed as a dental or jaw problem, and has been even said to be a psychological disorder.”

The problem is more common in woman and is less common in people under the the age of 40 years of age, with the average age of a person at onset being near 60 years old. The pain from TN is often severe and debilitating, often creating a significant change in the life of someone suffering from this problem. Because of this, unemployment rates of people suffering with TN is 34%.

In this case, a 55-year-old woman suffering with TN in her right jaw went to the chiropractor. The woman reported suffering an episode at least once daily for the past 6 months. The episodes were aggravated by activities such as chewing, talking and stressful situations. She was medically diagnosed with TN and given medications that she claimed did not help her issues.

A chiropractic examination was performed which consisted of a postural analysis, range of motion, leg length analysis, bilateral weight scales and spinal x-rays. Based on the examination, subluxations were determined to be present and specific forms of chiropractic adjustments were performed to correct the subluxations.

After the patient’s first adjustment, she reported that her pain completely went away and she remained pain-free for four days. She considered this remarkable as she was getting the TN pain on a daily basis prior to her first adjustment. After three months of care, the patient reported only experiencing two episodes of TN up to that point. Thereafter, she no longer had any reoccurrence of TN at all. The study noted that the woman stated that she is beyond astonished to finally be able to have discovered relief and reestablish her life.

The study author summed up this case by stating, “The chiropractic management of a 55-year-old patient suffering from trigeminal neuralgia is presented in this case study. Comprehensive improvement and alleviation of symptoms were achieved and recorded. This case supports the evidence of chiropractic care in relieving neurological disorders based on anatomical association and interference.”

Severe Neck Pain, Anterior Head Positioning and Spondylolisthesis Helped with Chiropractic

What is Spondylolisthesis? Can Chiropractic Care Help Degenerative Pain?

The Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research published a case study on November 7, 2016, reporting on chiropractic helping a woman suffering with severe neck pain, neck stiffness, and pain in the upper back associated with spondylolisthesis in her neck.

It most often occurs in the lower spine (lumbosacral area). In some cases, this may lead to your spinal cord or nerve roots being squeezed. This can cause back pain and numbness or weakness in one or both legs.”

The authors of this study further describe this condition as it relates to the neck by stating, “Spondylolisthesis of the spine refers to an anterior or posterior displacement of vertebrae relative to the vertebrae below. In the cervical spine, anterior or posterior vertebral displacement typically results from degenerative or traumatic causes.” This form of spondylolisthesis is known as degenerative cervical spondylolisthesis (DCS).

In this case, a 52-year-old woman suffering from neck pain, neck stiffness, and thoracic pain went to the chiropractor seeking relief. The woman reported that she experienced the pain frequently. She described the pain as severe, resulting in a tense and swelling sensation in her lower neck and upper back areas.

X-rays of the woman’s neck showed that the fourth vertebrae in her neck (C4) had moved significantly forward over the top of the fifth neck vertebrae (C5). Additionally, her C6 vertebrae had also move forward over her C7 neck vertebrae. The x-rays also showed that, overall, the woman’s head was significantly forward of a normal head position.

Based on the x-rays and a chiropractic examination, specific chiropractic care was started. After 30 visits, a re-evaluation was performed. This new examination with x-rays showed that the woman’s spondylolisthesis had been measurably reduced in both areas of her neck. Additionally, her overall head position had greatly improved. Due to these positive changes, the woman reported a complete resolution in her pain, stiffness, tension, and swelling.

In explaining how the mechanism for spondylolisthesis occurs, the authors of the study stated, “Abnormal posture, translational instability of vertebral segments, and abnormal facet angles have all been found to be predisposing factors for cervical degeneration and spondylolisthesis. These physiological changes can result in altered biomechanics leading to increased stress on the intervertebral discs and joints of the spine.”

Anxiety and Panic Attacks Resolved Under Chiropractic Care

Published in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research on October 17, 2016, is a documented case study of a woman suffering from panic and anxiety attacks being helped with chiropractic. The study begins by stating, “Anxiety disorders involve abnormal feelings of worry or fear that can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, school, work and relationships.”

The study notes that there are several different types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder. It is estimated that 18% of the adult population in America are affected by some form of anxiety. Panic disorder has a significant impact on the quality of life and is characterized by sudden periods of intense fear. This can be accompanied by palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate, sweating, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath, smothering or choking, and a feeling of impending doom.

Anxiety is commonly treated with medications or, psychotherapy. It has been well documented that the use of antidepressant medications has grown steadily in the past decade, and represents a growing health issue itself. In an attempt to seek alternatives to medications, more people are turning to other approaches including chiropractic care for anxiety.

In this case, a 49-year-old woman with a chief complaint of anxiety and panic attacks went to a chiropractic clinic in New Zealand. Associated with her anxiety, the woman was also suffering from tight gripping chest pains which began following three years of financial, work, family, and relationship stresses. She also had symptoms of gastrointestinal pain and discomfort, mild numbness of the arms and hands, tachycardia and headaches.

She had been prescribed an antidepressant drug which had reduced her chest pain but increased her anxiety and panic attacks. Her history included a significant amount of past physical, psychological and emotional trauma. Additionally, she had been struck by a car as a pedestrian and suffered a number of fractures and other injuries.

Chiropractic care was initiated at the rate of three visits per week. Within three weeks of beginning chiropractic care, the patient reported a reduction in anxiety and panic attacks. Overall, she reported much less anxiety and a significant reduction in the intensity and frequency of her panic attacks and chest pains. When she was experiencing panic attacks, she noted that she felt more in control, and was able to resolve them more easily. Because of this, she was able to reduce her medication.

By the tenth week of care, the patient reported that she felt better than ever and had not had a panic attack for the prior two weeks. After fourteen weeks of care, the woman reported a complete resolution of her anxiety, panic issues, as well as her related symptoms and she was able to discontinue her medication.

As part of their conclusions, the authors summed up the impact this study may have by noting, “Subluxation based chiropractic care may provide a significant contribution to the management of patients with anxiety disorders.”

Loss of Normal Forward Neck Curve Associated with Multiple Health Issues

How Important is Posture on Health? How Does Chiropractic Care Effect Spinal Posture?

The Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research published a literature review paper on March 28, 2016, that showed a connection between the loss of a normal neck curve and many types of adverse health issues.

This situation would be similar to holding a bowling ball out in front of you instead of up against your body.  Even though the weight of the bowling ball does not change, it is harder to hold the ball further away from your body.

This forward projection means the neck has to support the head that is out in front, and not normally balanced, resulting in more stress to the spine and neck muscles. This condition has become more prevalent with the increase use of technologies such as computers and smart phones.

The author explains how common this can be: “People spend an average of 2-4 hours per day with their heads tilted reading and texting on smart phones and similar devices. Cumulatively, this is 700-1400 hours a year of excess spine stress.”

This situation can lead to acceleration of cervical spine degeneration, and degeneration of the intervertebral discs. This situation can also lead to a loss or reversal of the normal forward curve in the neck. This forward curve is essential to absorb shock of normal day-to-day activities. A loss or reversal of the neck curve has been shown to lead to a number of health issues beyond just pain conditions.

The study also points out that abnormal head posture and curvature changes in the neck can lead to changes in normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. The brain’s pumping of CSF is essential for normal central nervous system function. The study notes that altered CSF flow has been associated with conditions  such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and dementia.

In an overview discussion, the author noted, “Forward head posture and a decreased cervical curve affect the biomechanics of the spine. This can accelerate cervical spine degeneration, contribute to cervical myelopathy, affect proprioception, and contribute to neurodegenerative diseases.”

In the conclusion, the study author explains that  head posture and the curvature of the neck is often overlooked as a causative factor in many health issues and can have a profound effect on the function of the human body: “The body is more complex than merely the sum of its chemical processes. They do not occur in a vacuum. Biomechanics influence the body as well and warrant further investigation in some pathology.”

Resolution of Fatigue, Malaise and Depression with Chiropractic

Can Chiropractic Care Help Depression? How Does Chiropractic Help Fatigue And Lack Of Energy?

The February 29, 2016, edition of the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research published a case study showing chiropractic helping a man suffering from general tiredness, fatigue, loss of energy and depression. According to the study authors, generalized fatigue and lack of energy are a common disorder accounting for about 5% of all adult visits to primary care physicians.

His chief complaint was that he was suffering with general tiredness and loss of energy. He also reported having occasional headaches and acid reflux.

He described his condition as a generalized malaise and lethargy, with occasional feelings of sadness and depression. The patient did not recall any specific incident that triggered his problems but noted that he has had these symptoms for over 12 years.

He reported that there was not a regular time or day in which he felt his symptoms were worse, but he did report that it was difficult to wake up and “get going” in the morning. Although he was able to conduct the normal activities needed to take care of himself and his family, he felt he lacked the energy to engage in the additional activities he would like to do. He did report that strenuous activity or exercise seemed to give him more energy. The patient’s family also noted his lack of energy and depression. He was not under medical care, or taking any medications for his condition.

A chiropractic examination of the patient consisted of a history, a postural inspection, basic physical examination, spinal palpation, spinal thermal readings (heat), and spinal x-rays. The palpation examination showed areas of increased spinal sensitivity and edema with taut fibers. The thermal examination showed areas of heat changes along the patient’s spine. Postural irregularities were observed and there was a slight reduction in normal spinal range of motion. The spinal x-rays confirmed spinal malpositioning.

It was determined that vertebral subluxations were present resulting in neurological dysfunction throughout the patient’s body. From this, a series of specific chiropractic adjustments were performed to address the subluxations that were found. The results of the care were measured by re-examination as well as self reports from both the patient and his family.

As his chiropractic care progressed, the patient reported an increase in energy and positive attitude. His family also reported that he was able to handle stressful situations much better. The study noted that, “His wife confirmed that he was able to complete more responsibilities at home during the week and on weekends with less difficulty and less complaints about low energy or tiredness.” The patient also began engaging in family outings which included fishing and hiking.

In their conclusion, the authors noted that the chiropractic care and management of this case focused on the detection and reduction of vertebral subluxations found in this patient. They commented, “This case study demonstrates the efficacy of subluxation-based chiropractic care for the management of fatigue and malaise in a single patient.”

Uncontrollable Muscle Movements, Jerks, and Tics Gone after Chiropractic Care

What Is Functional Movement Disorder? How Does Chiropractic Help The Nervous System?

From the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research comes a case study published on April 9, 2015, documenting a case of a patient with Functional Movement Disorder (FMD) being helped with chiropractic. The study authors define FMD by stating, “A FMD is described as abnormal movement or positioning of the body due to the nervous system not working properly, but not due to any underlying neurological disease.”

Due to the absence of an underlying pathology, medical care for patients with these conditions is often a challenge.  Because of the lack of a medical explanation in many of these cases, some medical experts suggest that the causes of these issues is psychological in nature.

In this case, a 36-year-old woman went to the chiropractor suffering from uncontrollable body shakes (hyperkinesia) with tics and uncontrollable muscle jerks. The woman’s problems began 5 months earlier during a time when she reported a high level of work stress. Her condition had gotten so severe that she was unable to work at the time of her visit to the chiropractor. Her history revealed that she was also suffering from anxiety and chronic neck pain.

The woman consulted a medical doctor who referred her to a neurologist. After not finding a medically known physical cause, the neurologist referred the woman to a psychiatrist, suspecting that her problems were psychological in origin. The patient decided not to see a psychiatrist and began chiropractic care instead. She did not follow up with the neurologist after his referral.

The patient began chiropractic care and was seeing visible progress by the eight week of her care. By the 20th week of care, all her symptoms of FMD were gone and she had returned to normal. Additionally, she reported that her secondary complaints of anxiety and chronic neck pain had also corrected.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases released a bulletin in 2007 which backs up what chiropractors have been teaching for 100 years – that your nerve system plays the foremost role in your immune system and ability to fight disease.

For many years, chiropractors have observed in their own practices that their patients sometimes demonstrate improvements of complaints related to immune problems: the disappearance or lessening of allergy symptoms, quicker recovery from or less frequent and severe colds and other respiratory infections, and so on.

Neural dysfunctions due to spinal misalignments are stressful to the body and cause abnormal changes that lead to a poorly coordinated immune response. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to boost the coordinated responses of the nervous system and immune system.

Chiropractic care was first linked to improved immunity during the deadly flu epidemic of 1917 and 1918. The funny thing was: Chiropractic patients fared better than the general population. This observation spurred a study of the field. The data reported that flu victims under chiropractic care had an estimated 0.25 percent death rate, a lot less than the normal rate of 5 percent among flu victims who did not receive chiropractic care.

Evidence is mounting that the immune system and the nervous system are linked in several ways. One well-known connection involves the adrenal glands. In response to stress messages from the brain, the adrenal glands release hormones into the blood. In addition to helping a person respond to emergencies by mobilizing the body’s energy reserves, these “stress hormones” can stifle the protective effects of antibodies and lymphocytes.

The Chiropractic Connection

The adrenal glands are controlled by the Central Nerve System. Vertebral subluxations at T11/T12 affect the function of your adrenal glands – and therefore all messengers produced by this vital organ! Anyone run down by adrenal stress should have their subluxations evaluated at T11/T12.

Wellness based chiropractors analyze the spine for subluxations and give corrective adjustments to reduce the stress on the nervous system. A 1992 research group found that when a thoracic adjustment was applied to a subluxated area the white blood cell (neutrophil) count collected rose significantly.

Studies are finding that chiropractic care is a way to improve immunity. One study, from the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Illinois, found that disease-fighting white blood cell counts were higher just 15 minutes after a chiropractic adjustment was applied to the back.
