Do Chiropractors Treat Pregnancy Related Pain? Is Chiropractic Safe with Surgical Rods?

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published an unusual study on March 23, 2017, documenting the case of a pregnant woman with lower back pain being helped by chiropractic. What makes this case unusual is that the woman had previous spinal surgery and had Harrington rods inserted into her spine.

Up to one million people had Harrington rods implanted for scoliosis between the early 1960s and the late 1990s.

The study begins by noting that chiropractic care for pregnant women has been a popular occurrence for much of the chiropractic profession’s history. Commonly, women seek chiropractic care to address physical complaints such as pregnancy-related musculoskeletal complaints. However, many pregnant women seek chiropractic for wellness care and to improve the birth experience.

In this case, a 28-year-old woman who was in her 21st week of pregnancy, sought chiropractic care with a chief complaint of shoulder and neck pain, which she attributed to her scoliosis. She had surgery seven years prior for a moderate scoliosis. Harrington rods were inserted into her spine from her second thoracic to her second lumbar vertebrae.

She rated her constant pain as 6 out of 10, with 10 being the worst. She recalled that this episode started when she was lying on her left side and she felt a muscle tightened so tightly that it was pulling on the rods from her scoliosis surgery. Her pain was worse at night and was too painful for her to get a massage. Her left shoulder was restricted and she claimed that she could not lift anything with her left arm. Additionally, she reported that she occasionally suffered with headaches and sinus congestion.

A chiropractic examination was performed, and it was determined that subluxations were present. A series of specific chiropractic adjustments were begun to address the woman’s subluxations. After each adjustment the patient reported a decrease in her pain.

After 13 weeks of chiropractic care, it was reported that the woman’s pain had significantly decreased and was now only a 2 out of 10. Additionally, her posture had improved as had her spinal range of motion. A week later, the patient suffered a fall which caused a minimal increase in her symptoms. Care was continued and she continued to improve in most areas. She delivered a seven pound girl vaginally with minimal assistance.

The complexity of this case, due to the patient’s spinal surgery history, contributed to variations in her symptoms as care was given. Overall, the quality of her life was improved and she was able to deliver a healthy baby. In their conclusion, the study authors summed up this unusual case by stating, “This case report provides supporting evidence on the effectiveness of chiropractic care throughout pregnancy and in particular, pregnant women with surgical rods to address scoliosis.”

Long Term Study Shows Improvement of Scoliosis with Chiropractic

What is scoliosis? What are my options for scoliosis treatment?

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a follow-up study on February 2, 2017, showing the long-term improvement of scoliosis with chiropractic. This study was the second of two studies that tracked the long-term progress of patients who had participated in an earlier scoliosis study.

This study reviewed those cases and looked long-term to see how the chiropractic care had an effect over a longer period of time.

The researchers noted that adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) affects 2-4% of children between the ages of 10-16 years. Idiopathic scoliosis is the largest category of scoliosis. The medical treatment for this condition is usually bracing, or in more severe cases surgery.

In prior studies, bracing was shown to be of limited benefit with several major studies showing that, over the long-term, the patient’s scoliosis continued to get worse. Surgery for scoliosis is a severe risky process with results being mixed. The cases where the surgery is unsuccessful leave the patients with significant health issues. In the opinion of many, surgery should be only considered in the most extreme cases and as a last resort.

A number of chiropractic studies have shown variable degrees of correction of scoliosis from the care. In most all cases, there was minimal risk of harm with the worst case scenario being that the scoliosis continued to progress over time.

This study looked at two groups of subjects. One was a group with scoliosis and one group was less severe and categorized as sub-scoliosis. The ranges of age for the scoliosis group was 7-16 years of age, with the sub-scoliosis group ranging from 4-17 years of age.

The results showed that of the 36 subjects included in the original study, 24 continued care. Of those, only 20 had an additional spinal x-rays taken and therefore could be included in this study review. During the time between the first follow-up x-rays and the final follow-up x-rays, there was a 7.6% reduction on average for those subjects with scoliotic curves, and a further 18% decrease for those who were classified as having sub-scoliotic curves.

The initial study had shown an improvement in the curvatures of most all subjects in the original study. When 20 of those were x-rayed again sometime later, most showed additional long-term correction of their curvatures. The subjects had received care from between one and four years.

On average, the additional correction of curvature for the entire group showed a 12.9% decrease in curvature following the initial care. This change added to the initial change resulted in a 46.8% mean average decrease of the curvatures over the course of care for the entire group. When looked at individually, the researchers noted that the 10 subjects in the scoliosis group had an average correction of 31.5%, while the 10 subjects in the sub-scoliosis group had a average correction of 62.1%.

Scoliosis Helped with Chiropractic According to Study

A study published on December 12, 2016, in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health showed that chiropractic care had a positive affect for the correction of Idiopathic Scoliosis. According to this study, scoliosis is commonly defined as a lateral curvature of the spine greater than 10 degrees.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health website describe this condition by saying, “Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that appears in late childhood or adolescence. Instead of growing straight, the spine develops a side-to-side curvature, usually in an elongated “S” or “C” shape; the bones of the spine are also slightly twisted or rotated.”

In this retrospective case series, 36 subjects were included. To be included in the study, patients had to have been 18 years of age or younger and have been under chiropractic care in the past 5 years. All patients included must have had a scoliosis of at least 11 degrees that was measured by x-ray, and each of those must have had a follow-up lumbar x-ray after at least two weeks of chiropractic care.

Using the above criteria, 14 eligible patients were found aged 7-16 with initial scoliosis ranging from 11 to 27 degrees. Additionally, there were 22 subjects within the ages of 2-17 who were considered to be a sub-scoliotic group because they had curvatures between 7 and 10 degrees.

All participants in both groups received specific chiropractic adjustments to restore proper spinal structure and motion by correction of vertebral subluxations. The results of the care based upon examinations and post x-rays was charted in spreadsheets and analyzed.

In the group with a scoliosis of 11 degrees or greater, the average subject age at pre x-ray was 10.77 years old. The results showed that the average number of adjustments given prior to the post x-ray was 5.75. The average time between pre and post x-rays was 39.43 days. As a result of the chiropractic care, the average percent of scoliosis improvement in this group was 25.96%. Additionally, 9 of 14 patients showed improvement, two showed no change, and three patients’ curvatures were worse.

In the sub-scoliosis group with curvature less than 11 degrees, the average age at pre x-ray was 8.91 years old. The average number of adjustments given prior to the post x-ray was 6.41, and the average time between pre- and post-adjustment x-ray was 141.32 days. In this group, 18 of 22 patients showed improvement with the average improvement being 51.84%. One of the patients showed no change, two were worse, and six of those in this group showed 100% improvement over the course of their care.

In their conclusion, the study authors summed up the results by stating, “This study demonstrates a group trend towards structural change within the scoliosis group of 25.96% over an average of 4.75 specific spinal adjustments. An even greater trend towards correction of 51.84% over an average of 6.41 adjustments was found in the sub-scoliosis group who started care with curvatures of 7-10 degrees. Six subjects in this group experienced 100% correction at their first re-examination x-ray.”

Neck Curve Improved with Chiropractic After Fusion Surgery

What is a Normal Neck Curve? Can Chiropractic Restore Loss of Neck Curvature?

From the scientific journal, the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, comes a study published on May 12, 2016, showing that chiropractic helped a patient improve their neck curvature even after having spinal fusion surgery. A normal neck, when viewed on x-ray from the side, has a normal forward curvature.

The study points out that once a neck curvature starts to decrease or reverse, the condition, if left untreated, makes itself worse over time. Many health issues seem to follow the progression of a loss of neck curvature. These problems include low back pain, disc degeneration, spondylosis, ossification of spinal ligaments, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, improper rib cage expansion, early osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, vertebral compression fractures and spondylolisthesis.

Problems from a loss of curve basically fall into two categories. These problems are either musculoskeletal in nature or neurological in nature. The musculoskeletal problems stem from an altered structure that affects posture and the mechanic of the spine. The neurological problems can affect the spinal cord itself as it gets stretched over a neck that is curving the wrong way.

In this study, a 43-year-old woman went to the chiropractor with a long history of severe neck pains. This problem was so severe that she had even had spinal fusion surgery on the lower parts of her neck. This surgery, however, did not yield the desired result, which caused the woman to seek chiropractic care. She was also suffering from mid-back pain as well as pain in the lower back.

A chiropractic examination was performed that included palpation, thermographic heat studies, and both static and motion x-rays. Her neck curve was almost totally reversed compared to a normal neck curvature. In addition, several areas of the neck did not have normal motion when examined with motion x-rays.

From the examination, a determination was made that subluxations were present. Specific chiropractic adjustments were given to address the subluxations and reversal of the neck curve.

After 9 visits, the study reports that follow up x-rays showed close to a 50% improvement in the woman’s neck. Additionally, the woman reported that most of her symptoms were significantly reduced.

In their conclusion, the authors sum up the importance of restoring a more normal cervical curve with chiropractic care. “Loss of spinal sagittal curves, specifically the cervical curve is a significant health risk, not only directly to the spinal cord via anoxia, leading to atrophy, but also the entire body since the nervous system is the control center for all bodily functions.”

Scoliosis Helped by Chiropractic According to Study

What Is Scoliosis? How Is Scoliosis Diagnosed? Can Chiropractic Help Scoliosis?

The Journal of Physical Therapy Science released a study in their April 2016 issue that showed that chiropractic care can help reduce or correct scoliosis in young children. In their abstract, the study authors state,  The purpose of this study was to examine whether chiropractic techniques would reduce the curvature of idiopathic scoliosis, which commonly occurs in elementary school children.

Scoliosis Helped by Chiropractic According to Study Austin TX Chiropractor Kids Family ChildrenAccording to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases,  Scoliosis is a musculoskeletal disorder in which there is a sideways curvature of the spine, or backbone.  Scoliosis is measured using a system known as the  Cobb angle.  The Cobb angle is determined by comparing the tilt of two vertebrae at different points in the spine. When the angle measured is more than 10 degrees, it is classified as scoliosis.

In this study, five healthy elementary school students who had scoliosis were examined and measured to document the degree of scoliosis. The five participants each had a scoliosis that measured at least 10 degrees. The average age was between 11 and 12 years. Four of the children were boys and one was a girl.

A chiropractic examination was performed on each of the five participants and chiropractic adjustments were given to areas that, according to the study, did not show proper alignment. Chiropractic care was rendered three times per week for a period of 8 weeks. A measurement of the scoliosis was taken at the forth and eighth week of care to compare with the initial Cobb angles.

Results of chiropractic care for each of the subjects was dramatic. Two of the boys had an initial Cobb angle of 10 degrees. In both of these cases the Cobb angle was corrected to 0 (zero) degrees after just four weeks of chiropractic care. One boy with an initial 13 degree Cobb angle was reduced to 7 degrees by week four, and down to 0 degrees by week eight. The fourth boy had an initial Cobb angle of 11 which was reduced to 5 degrees at 4 weeks and remained at 5 degrees at the 8 week check. The one girl in the study started at 12 degrees of Cobb angle and was completely corrected to 0 degrees by week four.

In all, three of the five children showed total correction within 4 weeks, with one child taking 8 weeks. Only one child showed a partial correction of better than half by week four.

The authors of the study are PhDs and not chiropractors, from Department of Physical Therapy, College of Health and Welfare, Silla University, Republic of Korea. They explained the study and the results in their discussion by saying,  In application of chiropractic techniques, a specific area of the vertebrae and joint is identified, and a rapid, low-amplitude stimulus is applied to correct the joint by applying force to it so that the joint moves into the physiological range and past the elastic range, which is the normal motion range of the joint. Therefore, chiropractic techniques are known to correct a twisted spine, restore muscle imbalance, help restore functions of spinal nerves.

Cross-Eyes Helped with Chiropractic

What Is Strabismus? How Can Chiropractic Help Crossed Eyes?

A study published on March 12, 2015 in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health documents a case of a Down’s Syndrome boy with crossed eyes being helped with chiropractic.

The authors of the study begin by explaining, “Chiropractic is often mistakenly regarded as having a very limited scope of practice in general, i.e. neck pain, back pain and headaches. Yet, chiropractors and their patients experience a multitude of positive results beyond these musculoskeletal complaints, especially in children.”

Studies show that usage of chiropractic nearly doubled in a few short years, rising from 11% in the early nineties to 20% by the late nineties. They note that children represent between 8% and 11% of chiropractic care received.

The authors further explain, “Some of the common pediatric conditions addressed by chiropractors include scoliosis, infantile colic, nocturnal enuresis, constipation, otitis media, seizures, autism, ADHD, asthma, cerebral palsy and strabismus. However, one study revealed that wellness care was the highest ranking reasoning for pediatric chiropractic care.”

In this case, a 4-year-old Down’s Syndrome boy was brought into the chiropractor’s office along with his family for correction of any subluxations. The boy’s right eye was crossed inward. The mother  reported that both the boy’s eyes were originally crossed and that surgery had been performed on the left eye in an attempt to return it to a more normal position.

After a chiropractic analysis, adjustments were initiated to correct the boy’s subluxations. After 12 visits, the boy’s parents reported to the chiropractor that their son’s right eye had completely returned to center. Additionally, his left eye, which had been surgically corrected, started to also correct and was therefore slightly  divergent from center. This indicated that the surgery may not have been needed, as the eye may have attempted to correct itself with chiropractic.

In their conclusion the authors wrote. “The results of the reduction of vertebral subluxation in this case suggest that chiropractic care may be beneficial in the correction of strabismus. Had the patient not undergone the operation to repair the left eye, we propose that both eyes would have been centered in the neutral position.”
