On March 13, 2017, the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research published a case study documenting the improvement from chiropractic of a woman who had been suffering with fibromyalgia, widespread pain, fatigue, depression, and headaches.

The word itself is actually a descriptive term that can be broken down into three words. “Fibro” is a Latin word meaning fibrous tissues such as tendons and ligaments. The middle part “my” is short for “myo” which is Latin for muscles. And the word “algia” is Latin meaning pain. The study authors note how common this problem is by stating that, “It is estimated to affect 2-3% of the American population and is the second most common diagnosis made in rheumatology clinics in the United States.”

Fibromyalgia is about ten times more common in women than men, and commonly starts between the ages of 60 to 79 years. Due to many patients with fibromyalgia also suffering from depression, common medical treatment is low-dose antidepressants as well as pain medication.

In this case, a 40-year-old woman went to the chiropractor with an 8-year history of medically diagnosed fibromyalgia. Her symptoms included widespread pain, including neck pain, mid and upper-back pain, and arm and shoulder pain. She was also suffering from headaches, high blood pressure, and depression. The medical care she had been receiving for her condition included three non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) per day, seizure medication, and a series of three cortisone injections.

A chiropractic examination was performed to access the woman’s spine and nervous system. This consisted of postural evaluation, x-rays of the spine, paraspinal surface electromyography (sEMG), paraspinal thermography, range of motion (ROM), and motion and static palpation. Additionally, a 36-question short-form (SF-36) questionnaire was given. This questionnaire is a standard and verifiable measurement of quality of life as stated by the patient. It is often used to gauge the overall improvement of a patient in their abilities to have a normal and function life. The scores that the patient can give themselves in each of the areas range from 0 for the worst possible, to 100 representing the highest level of functioning possible.

The woman received a total of 44 chiropractic visits over a 5 month period after which a re-examination was performed and all tests were compared to the original findings. The study records that all objective findings showed improvement including the patient’s range of motion, the sEMG tests, as well as x-ray findings.

The SF-36 patient questionnaire showed considerable improvement in most all the areas as reported by the woman. Her emotional well-being improved 10 points from 39.6 to 49.6. Her reported energy/fatigue improved 37.5 points from a 16.6 to 54.1. She reported that her general health improved 35.0 points from a 3.0 to 38.0. As for pain, her original rating was a complete 0, which improved 36.7 points. Likewise she rated her physical functioning at 0 before her care which improved to 39.4 after chiropractic. Her limitations due to emotional problems improved 8.3 points from 50.9 to 59.2. The woman reported that her social functioning improved 37.5 points from an original 21.2 to 58.7 after chiropractic.

In their conclusion the authors wrote, “Reduction in radiographic vertebral subluxations and improvements in spinal alignment and posture, ranges of motion, musculoskeletal pain, headaches, and health-related quality of life were achieved using [chiropractic] on a patient diagnosed with fibromyalgia.”

Resolution of Fatigue, Malaise and Depression with Chiropractic

Can Chiropractic Care Help Depression? How Does Chiropractic Help Fatigue And Lack Of Energy?

The February 29, 2016, edition of the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research published a case study showing chiropractic helping a man suffering from general tiredness, fatigue, loss of energy and depression. According to the study authors, generalized fatigue and lack of energy are a common disorder accounting for about 5% of all adult visits to primary care physicians.

His chief complaint was that he was suffering with general tiredness and loss of energy. He also reported having occasional headaches and acid reflux.

He described his condition as a generalized malaise and lethargy, with occasional feelings of sadness and depression. The patient did not recall any specific incident that triggered his problems but noted that he has had these symptoms for over 12 years.

He reported that there was not a regular time or day in which he felt his symptoms were worse, but he did report that it was difficult to wake up and “get going” in the morning. Although he was able to conduct the normal activities needed to take care of himself and his family, he felt he lacked the energy to engage in the additional activities he would like to do. He did report that strenuous activity or exercise seemed to give him more energy. The patient’s family also noted his lack of energy and depression. He was not under medical care, or taking any medications for his condition.

A chiropractic examination of the patient consisted of a history, a postural inspection, basic physical examination, spinal palpation, spinal thermal readings (heat), and spinal x-rays. The palpation examination showed areas of increased spinal sensitivity and edema with taut fibers. The thermal examination showed areas of heat changes along the patient’s spine. Postural irregularities were observed and there was a slight reduction in normal spinal range of motion. The spinal x-rays confirmed spinal malpositioning.

It was determined that vertebral subluxations were present resulting in neurological dysfunction throughout the patient’s body. From this, a series of specific chiropractic adjustments were performed to address the subluxations that were found. The results of the care were measured by re-examination as well as self reports from both the patient and his family.

As his chiropractic care progressed, the patient reported an increase in energy and positive attitude. His family also reported that he was able to handle stressful situations much better. The study noted that, “His wife confirmed that he was able to complete more responsibilities at home during the week and on weekends with less difficulty and less complaints about low energy or tiredness.” The patient also began engaging in family outings which included fishing and hiking.

In their conclusion, the authors noted that the chiropractic care and management of this case focused on the detection and reduction of vertebral subluxations found in this patient. They commented, “This case study demonstrates the efficacy of subluxation-based chiropractic care for the management of fatigue and malaise in a single patient.”

Hypothyroidism Improved Under Chiropractic Care – A Case Study

The Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research published a case study on December 10, 2015, documenting chiropractic helping a patient suffering hypothyroidism. WebMD describe this condition by saying, “Hypothyroidism, also called underactive thyroid disease, is a common disorder. With hypothyroidism, your thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone.”

People with hypothyroidism can typically experience joint pain, cold intolerance, constipation, depression, difficulty concentrating, dry skin, fatigue, hair thinning, hair loss, memory impairment, muscle pain, weakness and weight gain. Medical treatment of this condition is typically medications given to replace the hormone not being produced by the thyroid.

This case involved a 44-year-old woman who went to the chiropractor for primary complaints of pain in the upper back and between the shoulders. These problems seemed to be the result of an automobile accident she was involved in 23 years prior. The accident was a severe head-on collision which resulted in loss of consciousness and some amnesia. She was taking a thyroid medication for her thyroid problem.

A chiropractic examination was performed that included postural inspection, palpation, surface EMG, thermography, and spinal x-rays. The results of the examination showed a loss of the normal neck curvature and the presence of subluxations. Specific chiropractic adjustments were started at the rate of three visits per week for a month after which the frequency of visits was reduced.

After one month of care, the patient came into the chiropractor’s office with her teeth chattering, her hands shaking, and the signs of tremors. The chiropractor suggested that the woman return to her endocrinologist to be retested for her thyroid issue. The results of that testing showed that her thyroid had regained enough function that the endocrinologist recommended a reduction in the woman’s medication.

At the six month point of her care, the patient showed significant functional and structural improvements, and her neck curvature returned to a near normal forward curvature. In their conclusion, the authors reported that chiropractic, “…treatment regimen is shown to be effective in reducing vertebral subluxation as well as improve cervical curve in a 44-year-old patient with hypothyroidism. The reduction in signs and symptoms of VSC (vertebral subluxation complex), in this case, correlated to a reduction in hypothyroid symptoms and an overall increase in thyroid function.”
