Fever Resolved in Child with Chiropractic Care

Is A Fever A Good Thing? Can Chiropractic Care Help the Immune System Fight Infection?

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case study on December 22, 2016, documenting the case of a young boy with acute fever being resolved with chiropractic. Fever is triggered by an activation of the immune system as it fights things such as bacteria and viruses.

Fever Resolved in Child with Chiropractic Care - Austin Texas Chiropractor Pediatric Kids Infants Babies Newborns Spinal CareThe Mayo Clinic states,  “A fever is a temporary increase in your body temperature, often due to an illness. Having a fever is a sign that something out of the ordinary is going on in your body.”  They continue by noting, “Fevers generally go away within a few days. A number of over-the-counter medications lower a fever, but sometimes it’s better left untreated. Fever seems to play a key role in helping your body fight off a number of infections.

This study begins by pointing out that although there are many anecdotal reports of chiropractic being effective for cases of fever, there is little in the way of published studies on this subject. Most of the published evidence for chiropractic care is for musculoskeletal conditions such as back and neck pain. However, additional studies have shown chiropractic being helpful for conditions such as menstrual disorders, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, colic, ear infections, and bedwetting.

In this case, an 11-year-old boy was brought to the chiropractor. Five days before his chiropractic visit, he developed a fever along with symptoms of general malaise, fatigue, and behavioral changes such as decreased activity, lethargy, and decreased communication. His temperature was monitored by his mother and ranged from 101 degrees to 103 degrees Fahrenheit. The boy’s mother was giving him acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) every 4-6 hours with no change in the fever. After 2 days of the fever, the boy was seen by an MD and prescribed amoxicillin for acute unspecified upper respiratory infection.

A chiropractic examination was performed which showed muscle tightness and swelling. Additionally, spinal range of motion showed restrictions. Specific chiropractic adjustments were administered to the boy based upon the findings.

The boy’s mother checked her son’s temperature upon returning home which was approximately one hour after the chiropractic visit. She reported that her son’s temperature had returned to normal at 98.4 degrees. Additionally, she reported that her son’s energy increased and he returned to his normal behavior of being talkative, active, and had increased ability to focus.

The boy reported that within 60 minutes of the first adjustment he felt  back to normal  and was no longer achy, sore, or having headaches. His mother reported that his temperature remained normal and he continued to be energetic, talkative, and back to his regular level of activity.

In their discussion the study authors stated,  This case report outlined the care of a male child with acute illness resulting in both immunological and musculoskeletal symptom improvement within 60 minutes of treatment and was sustained at follow-up appointments.

Otitis Media Helped with Chiropractic

Are Antibiotics the Best Treatment for Ear Infections? Can Chiropractic Help Otitis Media?

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case study on July 18, 2016, documenting the improvement of otitis media and sleep problems in a baby girl through chiropractic care. Otitis media, more commonly known as ear infections, is any inflammation of the middle ear regardless if it is caused by an infection.

Otitis Media Helped with Chiropractic - Austin TX Pediatric Chiropractor for Ear Infection No Need for AntibioticsThe authors of the study begin by noting how common and trying re-occurring ear infections can be. “Frustration at reoccurring ear infections is one reason some parents are driven to seek ‘alternative’ treatments for their children. This frustration is well warranted, considering two out of three children will be medically diagnosed with otitis media in their first three years of life.”

Otitis media can affect any age group but is most prevalent in infants and children. It is estimated that by age four, 80% of children will have suffered a bout of otitis media. The rate of this problem has increased as the study reports that between 1975 and 1990, there was a 150% increase in the number of children in the United States who are diagnosed with otitis media. Common symptoms of otitis media include ear pain, difficulty sleeping, excessive crying, increased irritability, difficulty hearing or responding to sounds, loss of balance, fever, draining from ear, headaches, and loss of appetite.

In this case, a mother of a 2-year-old girl brought her daughter into the chiropractor. She was looking for help with her daughter’s re-occurring ear infections in the hopes of avoiding having tubes put into the baby’s ears, which had been recommended by her pediatrician. She was also looking for an alternative to the ongoing rounds of antibiotics her daughter had been given.

A chiropractic examination, including palpation, spinal heat readings and postural analysis were performed to determine the presence of subluxations that could be related to the baby girl’s problem. The presence of subluxation was determined, and care was begun in the form of specific adjustments appropriate for the age and size of the baby.

After one month of care, a re-assessment was performed which reported that the girl had been able to sleep through the night and had not had any ear infections since starting chiropractic. After about five months under chiropractic care, the study reports that the girl had not had any ear infections and had not needed any antibiotics since the beginning of care.

In their conclusion, the study authors describe how chiropractic can help in otitis media cases such as this. “Chiropractic exam found subluxations at multiple levels, which were addressed in the following weeks and months of care. Through removing these subluxations, the doctor of chiropractic removed the nerve interference and allowed the patient’s body to heal.” Based on the results of this and other studies the authors recommended “…chiropractic treatment is a better option for care of concurrent subluxation and otitis media than traditional allopathic care, which relies heavily on antibiotic treatment.”

Resolution of Breastfeeding Difficulties With Chiropractic

Why Is My Baby Refusing To Latch? Can Chiropractic Help Latching Problems During Breastfeeding?

A study published on April 25, 2016, in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health documented the case of an infant who was having difficulties with breastfeeding being helped with chiropractic care.

Resolution of Breastfeeding Difficulties With Chiropractic Austin TX Chiropractor Pregnancy Infant LatchingThe authors of this study begin by noting the seriousness of breastfeeding problems. Breastfeeding difficulties in the newborn can have dire consequences. Beyond the obvious need for sustenance, studies indicate that breastfed infants have fewer ear and respiratory tract infections, diarrheal illnesses, and atopic skin disorders.

In this case, a 2-week-old boy was brought to the chiropractor for help with difficulties of latching to breastfeed. The infant had not had any previous medical care for this problem and was not on any medication. Examination of the baby’s abdomen and lungs were normal, as were his neurological reflexes.

The history also showed that the baby was born vaginally by vacuum extraction. In many cases, this procedure can lead to damage and nerve impingement of the structure of the upper neck. This process is known as subluxation.

Palpation of the spine along with visual inspection led to the conclusion that multiple subluxations were present in this infant’s spine. With parental consent, the infant started receiving specific forms of adjustments designed for infants.

The study reports that the infant started showing improvement early in care. Over a period of four months, the infant continued to improve to the point where there was no longer a problem breastfeeding.

The authors reviewed additional literature on chiropractic helping breastfeeding problems and found 24 articles and research on this issue showing similar findings to their own. A common thread through all these studies was the finding of subluxations in the child or infant’s spine. Correction of the subluxations led to the positive results.

Chronic Ear Infections Resolved with Chiropractic According to Case Report

What is Otitis Media? Can Chiropractic Help Ear Infections?

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case study in their January 14, 2016, issue documenting the case of a young girl with otitis media being resolved with chiropractic care. Otitis media is the technical term for ear infections.

Chronic Ear Infections Resolved with Chiropractic According to Case Report - Pediatric Chiropractor Austin TX Ear Infections Kids Children BabyThe study estimates that approximately 40% of children suffer from otitis media (OM) before the age of five years. Commonly children who suffer with this problem have reoccurring episodes and are often prescribed antibiotics as medical treatment. The authors report that in an acute phase, OM is often associated with ear pain, fever, headaches, irritability, and listlessness. Otitis media is the most common infection for which antibiotics are prescribed for children in the United States, with medical costs being about 3 billion dollars a year.

In this case, a 4-year-old boy suffering from chronic earaches was taken to the chiropractor by his mother to see if chiropractic could help. The boy’s history showed that he had been suffering with otitis media since age three. In an effort to medically treat his problem, tubes had been inserted in his ears which fell out nine months later. After the failed medical care, the boy, who was scheduled to have a second ear tube surgery in less than one month, was brought to the chiropractor. The boy’s mother reported that her son would regularly pull on his ear, and she observed that his ear was red and had excessive wax buildup.

A chiropractic examination was performed which included palpation of the child’s spine, range of motion, as well as basic inspection and physical signs. From his examination, it was determined that the boy had subluxations in his upper neck area.

Specific chiropractic adjustments were given to address the boy’s subluxations. The boy was seen three times per week for the first two weeks of care, followed by a visit frequency of twice per week. Following the first adjustment, the boy’s mother reported that her son experienced relief for the entire day. She did notice fluid coming out of his ears as well as a runny nose. It was reported that he slept better that night and was less irritable.

After three visits, the mother reported that her son had improved enough that she decided to cancel her son’s second ear tube surgery. When the initial portion of the chiropractic care was completed, the boy’s parents decided to continue their son’s care on a wellness basis.

In their conclusion, the study authors offered, “This case report opens for the possibility that children with otitis media and failed medical care in the way of tympanostomy tubes may benefit from chiropractic care via chiropractic adjustment.”

Growing Number of Parents are Turning to Chiropractors to Treat Their Kids

Do Chiropractors See Kids? How Does Chiropractic Care Help Children?

The headline above comes from a June 22, 2015, feature article in the Minnesota Star Tribune. The article looks at several children who have had their lives improved by going to a chiropractor. The article begins by saying, “Concerned about the frequent use of antibiotics, some parents are seeking chiropractic care for everything from stomachaches to runny noses.”

Growing Number of Parents are Turning to Chiropractors to Treat Their Kids - Austin TX ChiropracticThe discussion about children needing chiropractic is a polarizing one. Many people believe very strongly that chiropractic care is essential for young spines while others do not. Kimberly is the mother of Tobias, an active one-year-old boy featured in the article who is a new chiropractic patient. “We knew that as our children were growing that we would seek chiropractic care as they had growing pains and accidents,” she explains. Noting how active her son is, she added, “And Tobias, he’s a mover and a shaker.”

Tobias’s chiropractor, Dr. Anne, explained that for many babies, the only way they can communicate something is wrong to their parents is by crying. “For an infant, their only way to tell a parent they don’t feel good is by crying.” She points out that this may not be just the result of being hungry or tired or wet, but may well be the result of a health issue that stems from a spinal misalignment, known as a subluxation.

Dr. Anne also explained the uniqueness of the process of adjusting a baby or small child. “With a 2-year-old, you’ve got about 20 seconds to get it done because they’re either yelling at you or want to be done. It’s hard to describe to a young kid what they’re going to feel,” she said. “So I always have them near Mom and Dad so that they’re not afraid.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that in 2012, about 3.1 percent of children in the U.S. were seen by chiropractors. Dr. Elise Hewitt, president of the pediatrics council for the American Chiropractic Association added, “That’s a total of almost 2 million children in 2012 that received chiropractic and osteopathic care.”

In explaining the typical scenario of why a parent brings their child to see a chiropractor, Dr. Anne said, “So parents get frustrated. They’ve been at the pediatrician for two or three months and their kid has been on three or four antibiotics,” she said. “More often than not, it’s a structural thing that’s causing the ear infections. So they end up here.”

To explain her reasons for bringing her kids to the chiropractor, Kimberly stated, “I think we’ve always understood that there’s such rapid growth when a child is growing, and the birthing process — I don’t ever say traumatic, but it can be dramatic,” she said. “So it has always sat right with us to have someone who understands the vertebrae be able to take a look at little guys early on.”

Violent Outbursts Reduced in a 10-Year-Old Boy with Chiropractic Care

Do Chiropractors See Kids? Can Chiropractic Care Help With My Child’s Behavior?

In the November 2014 issue of the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics is a case report documenting behavioral improvement in a boy after chiropractic care.  The authors note that although there have been numerous studies on children who were diagnosed with a variety of conditions that are associated with behavioral issues, this is the only study of its kind where the subject did not have such a prior diagnosis.

Violent Outbursts Reduced in a 10-Year-Old Boy with Chiropractic Care | Austin TX ChiropractorIn this case, a 10-year-old boy was brought to the chiropractor because of behavioral issues. It was reported that the boy would go from  being calm and relaxed to sudden outbreaks of violence. His mother also reported that he suffered from frequent panic attacks and periods of anxiety. The boy had been suspended from several schools, and was only allowed to attend his present school for 50 minutes each day.  Due to being out of school so much, he was not given an evaluation that may have led to a diagnosis.  He was also having difficulty sleeping and was unable to sleep by himself in a room.

The history showed that he had a difficult birth and had suffered from multiple ear infections and tubes placed in his ears as a small child. He also had a history of bowel issues suffering with both constipation and diarrhea.  He was given medication for his behavior, but that was discontinued as it caused weight gain.

The boy’s mother was given a questionnaire to rate and document her son’s condition and any changes from chiropractic care. This questionnaire was repeated regularly during care to evaluate any changes. Initially, she rated her son’s issues at the highest level of severity.  Chiropractic care was then begun with specific chiropractic spinal adjustments being administered.

By the fourth visit, the mother reported that she started to notice a significant change in her son’s behavior. By the ninth visit, her son had improved by over 80% as rated by the questionnaire. At the time of this report, the boy still had some violent outbursts. However, these were fewer and easier to get him out of than before his chiropractic care.  The boy’s mother also reported that her son was sleeping better and was able to sleep in his own bed.  He had no panic attacks, and his eating and bowel issues had improved.

The study authors concluded by writing: “This case report demonstrates that chiropractic spinal adjustments, the only treatment being rendered, were effective in improving the child’s behavior. This study suggests that chiropractic care helped to reduce violent outbreaks as well as to improve the patient’s sleep, with additional improvements to satiety and frequency of panic attacks.”
